Hapanasasa is an Almaty-based project that was at the forefront of blending ethnic and electronic music in Kazakhstan. They were at the heart of the first festivals, «The Spirit of Tengri» and «4E», creating electronic music with traditional instruments long before it became mainstream.
The story of Hapanasasa, which translates from Swahili as «here and now», began in 2010 at the Jazzystan festival in Almaty. The project activated the cultural code of the peoples of Central Asia with meditative sounds of national harmonies and a plethora of sound effects, live improvisations with the block flute, bansuri, kaluki, and dombra, mixed with heavy low-frequency synthesized bass and beats.
Their lyrics are infused with a sobering spirit of protest, exposing the truth of life and raising profound philosophical questions about existence and consciousness. The musical form of the project includes ethnopunk, dub, electro, noise, and world music, creating a unique sound that reflects the philosophy and atmosphere of Central Asia.
